How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

By Joanna Ferris, RN · June 7, 2026 · 4 min read

Good preparation is the difference between a smooth, effective laser hair removal session and one that's uncomfortable or less effective. Here's exactly what to do — and avoid — in the days before your appointment.

The week before

  • No waxing, plucking, or epilating the treatment area for 4 weeks before — the hair follicle needs to be intact for the laser to target it
  • No sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 2 weeks (avoid self-tanner too)
  • Pause retinoids, AHAs and BHAs in the treatment area for 3–5 days before

The day before or morning of

  • Shave the area cleanly the night before or morning of your appointment
  • Do not apply lotions, creams, oils, deodorant, or makeup to the treatment area
  • Come with clean, product-free skin

The day of treatment

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing (especially for body areas)
  • Bring water
  • Let us know about any medications, recent sun exposure, or skin changes

Right after

  • Skin may look pink and feel warm for a few hours
  • Cool compresses can help
  • Mineral SPF daily on any exposed treated skin
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and workouts for 24 hours
  • No waxing or plucking between sessions — shaving is fine
Laser hair removal is a series, not a single visit. Most areas need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, plus periodic maintenance.

Between sessions

Shaving between sessions is fine and encouraged. Do not wax, pluck, or epilate — the follicle needs to be present for the laser to work at your next appointment. Continue mineral SPF on treated areas exposed to sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get laser hair removal if I'm tanned?

We assess this at your consultation. Recent tans (real or self-applied) can affect safety and results.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe it as a warm snap. Cooling and technique keep it well-tolerated.

How long between sessions?

Typically 4–6 weeks for facial areas and 6–8 weeks for body areas.
