Botox vs Dysport: What's the Difference?

By Joanna Ferris, RN · May 17, 2026 · 6 min read

Botox and Dysport are two of the most well-known cosmetic injectable brands in the world. Both are neurotoxin treatments used to help soften the appearance of dynamic expression lines — such as forehead lines, frown lines (the '11s'), and crow's feet — by temporarily relaxing the muscles that create them.

At The Ferris Me, one of the most common questions we hear during consultations in our Lively, Greater Sudbury clinic is: 'Which one is better — Botox or Dysport?' The honest answer is that neither is universally better. They are similar in what they do, but there are meaningful differences in how they behave.

How are Botox and Dysport similar?

Both Botox and Dysport are neurotoxins based on botulinum toxin type A. Both work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to targeted facial muscles, which softens the appearance of the lines those muscles create with repeated movement.

Both are approved for cosmetic use and have decades of clinical experience behind them. Both are injected using very fine needles and treatments are typically quick, taking around 15–30 minutes.

How do we decide which one is right for you?

The best way to decide is through a consultation. Factors we consider include:

  • Which areas you want treated and how they respond to different products
  • Your previous experience with either product
  • How quickly you want to see results
  • Your goals for movement (subtle softening vs. a more pronounced smoothing)
  • Your budget and treatment cadence
Both Botox and Dysport are excellent options in the right hands. What matters most isn't the brand — it's the injector's assessment, dosing, and placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport (or vice versa)?

Yes — many clients switch between the two over time. A consultation helps determine the best plan for your goals.

Is one more painful than the other?

Both are typically well-tolerated. Sensation is more affected by injection technique than the product itself.

How often should I re-treat?

Most clients re-treat every 3–4 months, though this varies by individual response.
