Summer Skin Reset: What Summer Can Leave Behind — and What You Can Do About It

By Joanna Ferris, RN · August 21, 2026 · 7 min read

Summer is wonderful for long days, weekends outside and soaking up a little extra sunshine — but by the end of the season, you may start noticing that your skin looks a little different.

Pigmentation may appear more noticeable. Your complexion may look duller or less even. Texture can feel rougher, and skin that looked bright and hydrated at the beginning of summer may suddenly seem tired.

That is where a post-summer skin reset can come in.

At The Ferris Me, we do not believe there is one treatment that is right for every person. The best way to refresh your skin after summer depends on what we are actually seeing, your skin type, your concerns, your goals and how much downtime you are comfortable with.

Why Does Pigmentation Look Worse After Summer?

Ultraviolet exposure stimulates melanin production in the skin. Even when you are diligent with sunscreen, increased time outdoors throughout the summer can make existing freckles, sun spots and areas of uneven pigmentation more noticeable.

Some people may also notice conditions such as melasma becoming more apparent following increased sun and heat exposure.

That does not mean every brown spot should be treated the same way. Pigmentation can have different causes and sit at different depths within the skin, which is one of the reasons a consultation and skin assessment are important before choosing a treatment.

Option 1: Chemical Peels

For some patients, a chemical peel can be a great place to begin. Chemical peels use carefully selected solutions to exfoliate the skin and encourage the removal of damaged surface cells.

Depending on the peel selected, they may help improve the appearance of:

  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Uneven tone
  • Mild superficial pigmentation
  • Rough texture
  • Congestion
  • Overall brightness

Think of a chemical peel as a surface refresh. The type and strength of peel should always be selected based on your individual skin rather than choosing a peel simply because it is trending online.

Option 2: Microneedling

Microneedling takes a different approach. Rather than primarily exfoliating the surface, microneedling creates controlled microchannels within the skin to stimulate the body's natural healing response and support collagen production.

Microneedling may be considered when we are looking at concerns such as:

  • Uneven texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines
  • Overall skin quality
  • Uneven tone

For someone whose post-summer concern is not simply one or two brown spots, but rather that their skin feels generally uneven, textured or less healthy-looking, microneedling may be part of the treatment plan.

At The Ferris Me, we use the Dermapen 4 for our microneedling treatments.

Option 3: Fotona Laser Peels

For patients who would benefit from resurfacing, a Fotona laser peel gives us another option. Using the Er:YAG wavelength of our Fotona laser, we can precisely resurface superficial layers of the skin.

Depending on treatment depth and individual needs, laser resurfacing may be used to improve the appearance of:

  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Uneven texture
  • Superficial pigmentation
  • Fine lines
  • Roughness
  • Overall skin tone and brightness

A laser peel is not the same treatment as an IPL or BBL photofacial. IPL primarily uses light to target pigment and vascular concerns, while an Er:YAG laser peel works by precisely resurfacing the skin. The goal may be similar — clearer, brighter, more even-looking skin — but the way we get there is different.

So Which One Is Best?

This is my favourite part: you do not need to choose the machine. Your skin should determine the treatment.

Someone may benefit most from a chemical peel. Another person may be better suited to microneedling. Someone else may benefit from a Fotona laser peel. And for some patients, the best approach may involve a series of treatments over time rather than trying to accomplish everything in one appointment.

That is why our starting point is always looking at your skin and deciding what makes the most sense for you.

Your Treatment Does Not End When You Leave the Clinic

Professional treatments are only one part of improving and maintaining your skin. Home care matters too.

For most of our medical aesthetic skin treatments, we want to make sure you leave the clinic set up with the basics your skin needs: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen.

Your skin barrier needs support while it recovers, and sunscreen is particularly important when we are treating pigmentation or performing treatments that increase your skin's sensitivity to sun exposure. We want you leaving the clinic knowing both what we did to your skin and how to take care of it afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to treat pigmentation after summer?

Fall and winter are often ideal because sun exposure tends to be lower, which can support safer treatment and recovery for pigmentation-focused procedures.

Can I treat post-summer pigmentation in one appointment?

Sometimes one treatment helps, but many clients benefit most from a series of treatments and a consistent home-care routine. The right plan depends on your skin assessment.

Is there downtime after a chemical peel, microneedling or laser peel?

Downtime varies by treatment depth and individual response. Some peels have little to no downtime, while deeper resurfacing may involve a few days of redness or flaking. We discuss this during your consultation so you can plan accordingly.

Do I still need sunscreen after a skin reset treatment?

Yes. Sunscreen is essential after any treatment that addresses pigmentation or resurfaces the skin. It protects your results and supports healthy recovery.
