Does Microneedling Hurt? An Honest Answer

By Joanna Ferris, RN · May 19, 2026 · 5 min read

'Does microneedling hurt?' is one of the most Googled questions about the treatment — and rightly so. The word 'needle' in the name is enough to make most people wonder.

The honest answer: microneedling is usually well-tolerated. Most clients at The Ferris Me describe it as a pressure sensation with mild prickling, especially in more sensitive areas like the forehead and jawline.

What microneedling actually feels like

Microneedling uses a device with very fine needles to create tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-channels trigger the skin's natural healing response, which is what stimulates collagen and improves texture over time.

During the treatment, we apply a topical numbing cream about 20–30 minutes before starting. Once the skin is numbed, most clients report the sensation as:

  • A vibrating pressure sensation
  • Mild prickling in bonier areas (forehead, jawline)
  • Warmth in areas that get more passes
  • Very manageable overall — most clients don't need to pause

How we manage comfort

Topical numbing

A medical-grade numbing cream is applied before the treatment. This significantly reduces sensation and is the main reason microneedling is so well-tolerated.

Adjusting depth

Microneedling depth can be adjusted for different areas of the face. Bonier areas can use a shallower depth for comfort while still delivering results.

Pace of treatment

We work at a pace that's comfortable for you. If a particular area is more sensitive, we can pause, adjust, or come back to it.

What about after?

Immediately after microneedling, most clients notice:

  • Redness similar to a mild sunburn
  • Mild warmth for a few hours
  • Some tightness or dryness for 1–2 days

Redness typically fades within 24–48 hours. Full aftercare guidance — including what to apply and what to avoid — is reviewed at your appointment.

Most clients tell us microneedling was less intense than they expected. The numbing makes a big difference.

Who might find it more uncomfortable?

If you have very sensitive skin, low pain tolerance, or you're being treated over active breakouts, the sensation can be more noticeable. These are things we discuss at consultation so we can plan accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take pain medication before?

Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen for 24 hours before microneedling, as they can affect the skin's response. Your provider will give you specific pre-treatment guidance.

How many sessions will I need?

A series of 3–6 treatments is often recommended for best results, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Can I wear makeup after?

Most clients avoid makeup for 24 hours after microneedling. Specific timing is reviewed at your appointment.
