About this treatment

About Laser Hair Removal at The Ferris Me

Laser hair removal uses focused light energy that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle. That energy heats the follicle and damages its ability to produce new hair. Because hair grows in cycles — and only follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase respond well to laser — a series of treatments spaced weeks apart is typically recommended for meaningful reduction.

At The Ferris Me, laser hair removal is delivered following a personalized consultation, which helps determine suitability, treatment area, and expected number of sessions.

Every treatment at The Ferris Me starts with a personalized consultation. Joanna Ferris, RN, will review your medical history, current medications, previous aesthetic treatments, goals, and comfort level before recommending a plan. All treatments are performed under medical directive by a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Your visit

What to Expect

Your skin is cleansed and, if needed, hair in the treatment area is trimmed. Protective eyewear is worn by everyone in the room. The laser handpiece is passed over the area in short pulses. Cooling — either integrated into the device or applied separately — is used for comfort. Session length depends on the size of the area, from a few minutes for underarms to close to an hour for full legs.

Aftercare

Recovery & Downtime

Mild redness or a warm sensation at the treatment area is common and usually short-lived (a few hours). Hair may appear to 'grow' for 1–2 weeks after treatment as damaged follicles shed. Sun protection is essential between sessions. Full aftercare guidance is reviewed at your appointment.

Candidate information

Who Laser Hair Removal May Be For

Suitability depends on skin and hair characteristics. Laser hair removal works best on hair that has pigment; very light, grey, or white hair does not respond well. A consultation and possible patch test are used to confirm safety and expected response, especially for darker skin tones. Laser is not performed during pregnancy or over recently sun-tanned skin.

Risks & considerations

Risks & Side Effects

All medical treatments carry some risk. Common, temporary effects can include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, headache, or mild sensitivity at the treatment area. Rare but more serious risks — including asymmetry, infection, vascular events, or allergic reactions — are reviewed in detail during your consultation so you can make a fully informed decision. Because The Ferris Me operates under medical directive, we have protocols in place to manage complications, including access to reversal agents where clinically appropriate.

Concerns addressed

What Laser Hair Removal Can Help Address

Every consultation is different, but these are the concerns clients most commonly ask about when exploring laser hair removal at our Lively clinic.

  • Unwanted facial hair
  • Underarms
  • Bikini and Brazilian
  • Full leg / half leg
  • Back and chest
  • Ingrown hairs after shaving or waxing
  • PCOS-related unwanted hair (as part of a broader plan)
  • Convenience — reducing daily shaving time

How it works

Why Laser Hair Removal Requires a Series

At any given time, only about 20–30% of hair follicles are in the active growth phase (anagen) that responds best to laser energy. The rest are in transitional (catagen) or resting (telogen) phases and will not be effectively treated.

Spacing sessions 4–8 weeks apart lets us catch different follicles as they cycle into anagen. That is why a series — often 6–8 sessions on the face and 6–10 on the body — is standard.

Prep

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Shave the area (do not wax, pluck, or thread) within 24 hours of your appointment. Do not tan, self-tan, or use tanning beds for 2–4 weeks before treatment. Avoid retinoids in the treatment area for a few days beforehand. Skip aggressive exfoliation the day before. Come with clean, product-free skin the day of.

Let us know about any recent sun exposure, medications, or medical changes.

Aftercare

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, hot yoga) for 24 hours. No aggressive scrubbing or exfoliation for a few days. Wear SPF on any exposed treated area. No waxing, plucking, or threading between sessions — you can shave normally.

Myths & reality

Common Laser Hair Removal Myths, Reviewed

Myth

Laser hair removal is permanent hair removal.

Reality

The clinically accurate term is 'permanent hair reduction.' Most clients see significant, long-lasting reduction, but some maintenance sessions once or twice a year are often needed.

Myth

You can tan between sessions.

Reality

Tanned skin significantly increases the risk of laser injury (burns, pigmentation changes). Sun protection is not optional during a treatment series.

Cost considerations

What Goes Into Laser Hair Removal Pricing

Laser hair removal is priced by treatment area, with package/series pricing available. Because results depend on completing the full series, series pricing usually delivers better value per session and better outcomes than one-off treatments.

Pricing is reviewed transparently during your consultation so you can make a decision that fits both your goals and your budget.

Greater Sudbury

FAQ

Laser Hair Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

A series is usually recommended — often 6–8 sessions on the face and 6–10 on the body, with maintenance sessions afterward. The exact number depends on the area, skin, and hair characteristics.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Sensation varies by area and individual, often described as a warm snap. Cooling is used for comfort. Most clients tolerate treatment well.

Can I shave between sessions?

Yes — shaving between sessions is expected. Waxing, plucking, and threading should be avoided during a treatment series because they remove the follicle the laser targets.

Can I have laser hair removal in the summer?

It is possible, but sun exposure and tanning are important considerations. Guidance is provided during your consultation.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?

Modern lasers can safely treat many darker skin tones with appropriate settings and provider expertise. Your consultation and any recommended patch test confirm safety.

Does it work on white, grey, or blonde hair?

Laser targets pigment. Very light hair does not typically respond well. Alternative approaches can be discussed at consultation.

Can I get laser hair removal while pregnant?

No. Laser hair removal is not performed during pregnancy.
