How Long Does Botox Last?

By Joanna Ferris, RN · May 18, 2026 · 5 min read

One of the most common questions we hear at The Ferris Me is: 'How long will my Botox last?' It's a fair question, especially when you're trying to plan your maintenance schedule around work, holidays, or big events.

For most clients, Botox results last around 3–4 months. But 'most clients' isn't 'all clients,' and there are a few important factors that can shift that timeline in either direction.

What does 'lasting' actually mean?

Botox doesn't wear off all at once. Its effect gradually fades as the treated muscles slowly regain movement. You'll typically notice a bit more motion return in month three, and by month four many clients are ready for a maintenance treatment.

This means 'lasting' is a spectrum — you may still see partial results at four or five months even if you're due for a top-up.

Factors that affect how long Botox lasts

1. Dosage

Higher doses generally last longer, up to a point. This is one reason under-dosing (chasing a lower price) can lead to shorter-lived results — the treatment doesn't have enough product to work the full 3–4 months.

2. Muscle strength

Clients with stronger, more active facial muscles (think: expressive faces, frequent frowning, or years of very active workouts) tend to metabolize Botox faster.

3. Metabolism

A faster overall metabolism can mean shorter Botox longevity. This isn't something you can control, but it's part of why individual timelines vary.

4. Frequency of treatment

Over time, regular Botox users often find their treatments last a little longer as the treated muscles gradually weaken from disuse.

5. Injection technique

This is where injector experience matters most. Precise placement affects both how natural your results look and how long they last.

Planning your maintenance schedule

Most clients settle into a rhythm of Botox appointments every 3–4 months. Some do quarterly (every 3 months) and some stretch to every 4–5 months once they've been treating consistently for a while.

Tip: If you have a big event coming up, book your Botox 3–4 weeks in advance — that gives it time to fully settle for the most natural look.

What happens if I don't re-treat?

Nothing bad — your muscles simply regain their full movement and your expression lines return to how they were pre-treatment. There's no rebound effect or worsening of lines. You can stop and restart whenever you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Botox stop working over time?

Rarely. A small percentage of clients develop antibodies that reduce effectiveness, but this is uncommon in the doses used for cosmetic treatments.

Does Botox last longer the more you use it?

For many clients, yes — with regular treatment, results often stretch a little further over time.

How soon can I see if it worked?

You'll typically start noticing changes in 3–5 days, with full effect around two weeks.
