Lip Fillers: What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Booking your first lip filler appointment can feel like a big step. There's a lot of information online — some of it accurate, some less so — and the results you see on social media aren't always the results you'll actually get.

This guide walks through what to expect at your first lip filler appointment at The Ferris Me in Lively, so you can walk in feeling informed and comfortable.

Before your appointment

The consultation

Every first-time lip filler appointment starts with a proper consultation. We'll go through:

• Your goals — shape, definition, symmetry, volume, or all of the above
• Your medical history
• Any previous lip filler treatments and how they went
• Which product and technique is best suited for your goals
• What's realistic in one appointment vs. what may take a follow-up

This is also your chance to ask any questions — nothing is off-limits. If you're unsure whether filler is right for you, this is where we work through it together.

Pre-treatment tips

To help minimize bruising and swelling:

• Avoid NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), fish oil, and alcohol for 24 hours before
• Don't schedule for the week of a big event — give yourself at least 2 weeks
• Come well-hydrated and eat a small meal beforehand

During the appointment

Numbing

A topical numbing cream is applied for 15–20 minutes before treatment. Most modern lip fillers also contain lidocaine, which adds additional comfort during the injection itself.

The treatment

The actual injection portion typically takes 15–30 minutes. Filler is placed using a very fine needle or a cannula, depending on the plan. Common sensations include:

• A slight pinch at each injection point
• Pressure or a stretching sensation
• Minimal discomfort in most areas thanks to numbing

Right after

You'll leave the appointment with lips that look fuller than the final result — that's normal swelling. Expect:

• Noticeable swelling for the first 24–48 hours
• Mild bruising in some cases (a small percentage of clients)
• Tenderness for 1–3 days
• Small bumps that soften and settle over 1–2 weeks

Your lips will look their best around the two-week mark, once swelling has fully settled. Don't judge your results in the first few days.

Aftercare basics

For the first 24–48 hours:

• Avoid strenuous exercise
• Skip alcohol
• No heat exposure (saunas, hot yoga, tanning)
• Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated
• Gentle icing can help with swelling — no direct pressure

Dental work and travel after filler

Yes, but timing is important.

To reduce the risk of infection and inflammation, please avoid any dental work (including cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, or other dental procedures) for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your dermal filler appointment.

If you are planning to fly, it is recommended that you avoid air travel for 72 hours following your filler treatment. Changes in cabin pressure and prolonged sitting may contribute to increased swelling during the initial healing period. Waiting 72 hours allows the filler to begin settling and helps minimize unnecessary swelling or discomfort.

Your follow-up

For first-time lip filler clients, a follow-up 2–4 weeks after the treatment is often recommended. This lets us assess your settled result and, if needed, add a small amount to refine shape or symmetry.
