Botox Aftercare: The First 24 Hours
By Joanna Ferris, RN · June 2, 2026 · 4 min read
Botox is a quick treatment, but the first 24 hours are the most important for a smooth, settled result. Following a few simple aftercare rules helps minimize bruising, keep the product where we placed it, and protect your final result.
Do
- Stay upright for 4 hours after treatment
- Move the treated muscles gently and normally (frown, raise brows, smile)
- Keep the area clean and makeup-free for the rest of the day
- Sleep on your back if possible for the first night
- Continue your usual water intake
Avoid
- Rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours
- Strenuous exercise, saunas, hot yoga, or tanning for 24 hours
- Facials, microneedling, or laser treatments in the treated area for 2 weeks
- Lying face-down or wearing tight headwear for the rest of the day
- Alcohol for 24 hours (it can increase bruising risk)
What's normal
- Small pinpoint bumps at injection sites that fade in an hour or two
- Mild redness for a few hours
- Occasional tiny bruise
- A feeling of 'nothing yet' — Botox takes 3–5 days to start working and 2 weeks for full effect
If you're due for a big event, book Botox 3–4 weeks in advance — this gives it time to fully settle and any small refinements to be reviewed.
When to call us
Contact us if you notice significant asymmetry after two weeks, unusual drooping, or a bruise that isn't fading. These are uncommon, but we'd rather hear from you than have you wait it out on your own.
