Microneedling Downtime: What to Expect

By Joanna Ferris, RN · June 5, 2026 · 4 min read

'How much downtime will I have?' is the second most asked microneedling question after 'does it hurt.' The honest answer: usually 24–48 hours of redness, similar to a mild sunburn, followed by a few days of slight dryness.

Day-by-day

Day 0 (treatment)

Skin looks red and warm — similar to a sunburn. Mild tightness. No makeup for the rest of the day.

Day 1

Redness usually softens to a light pink. Skin may feel a little tight or rough. Mineral SPF only, gentle cleanser, and a bland moisturizer.

Days 2–3

Most redness has faded. Skin may feel slightly dry or look a bit dull as it turns over. Makeup can typically be resumed on day 2.

Days 4–7

Skin often looks noticeably brighter as the outer layer refreshes. Continue mineral SPF and skip actives (retinoids, acids) as directed.

How to plan around events

  • Book at least 5–7 days before an event for a comfortable window
  • Longer window (2 weeks) if you tend to redness or bruise easily
  • Series treatments are usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart

What to avoid after

  • Sun exposure and tanning beds for 1 week (mineral SPF daily)
  • Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C for 3–5 days (or as advised)
  • Sweaty workouts, saunas, hot yoga for 24–48 hours
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs for 48 hours
  • Picking, scrubbing or exfoliating the treated area
The best microneedling result comes from a series — usually 3–6 sessions — plus good home care between visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I microneedle before a big event?

Yes — with a 1–2 week window. Skip it if you have less than 5 days.

How often should I microneedle?

Every 4–6 weeks as a series, then a maintenance cadence based on your response.

Will I peel?

Most clients don't peel visibly, but light dryness and micro-flaking is common on days 2–3.
